Windows 7 May Be Broken Up Into Components

Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley believes that Windows 7 may be released in ‘components’ where customers will be able to choose which features they want to install, rather than every part of Windows 7 and the kitchen sink as well being installed as a default e.g. if you don’t want the mail, photos or video features then you could choose to not install them.

Although this approach will allow Microsoft to avoid attacks from competitors and regulators that they are forcing all of their features onto users, I just can’t see Microsoft doing this as it is one of their clear business tactics. Do you think Internet Explorer would have such a high adoption rate if it weren’t bundled with Windows? Would anyone use Live Search if it wasn’t rammed down users’ throats at every opportunity?

Modular installation could help keep installation sizes down, as I’m sure Windows 7 will need at least 3 times the disk space that Vista does.

    yes, when I was used to OS9 from Microware, Des Moines, I was forced to join the Mikeysoft Dream. Well this has exploded in all our faces with Vista Family to have it all in ONE GO. Now that Mikeysoft has decided to let the customer install it like LEGO blocks, maybe the tide will turn…

    can you get or how can i get a beta of 7. it looks like fun.

    all i read and videos ive seen seem pretty sweet. and add or not what components sounds great. i use xp pro 32bit. my system abit kn8 amd64 4000+ bfg7800gtoc 2gigs of mem all i do is surf convert music to mp3’s make and edit or convert videos and most of them ate fps game play videos. like stalker far cry cod stuff front lines fuel of war etc etc.i have not even tried crysis demo yet.i know my system would have a rough time so..but

    i wonder how this os would do playing my games. id like to now how it would bench with my most hard on my system games. i can play them all at 1600×1200 at 85hz on my viewsonic p95f+b and max settings.. stalker i have to drop to 1024×768 but again max settings.. id like to know how this os would work with far cry pain killer boh. stalker. and last crysis since i dont have but will someday. i know for my self and every1 i know plays all the fps games and build extra powerful systems and the best of vid cards or multi cards to play them..im too poor for all of that. but none of them or my self would not want this if it is a suck gamer os as we avoid vista for that reason. or other problems with vista and all we read is its a lemon or the new me or 2000 that never really took off. i only know 2 that just went and bought it. and ya i guess its been a slow road but i hear it is getting better.. but

    best i know its the gamer who pushes the tech. tho ya you have your normal office type user and no real need for monster machine for that. but the gamer pushes new cpu’s mobos and vid card development. if not for gamers the hardware developed or too would be more slow or stagnant. so we that spend the extra money and to play fps games want to know how this os will be as a gamer. if it will suck. i can say now. most of us will ask for a dx10 update for xp and we will run xp into the ground until microsoft does something to kill it so we can not use it anymore and try to force us to use new stuff.. we will not use vista no matter what is the way we feel about it.if 7 is not a good gamer we will not use it either unless forced too.

    any way i have a amd x2 3800+ sandie new in the box. i plan on getting a bfg 88 512mb g92 and a nice lcd as my future upgrades and too last me another 2 years. im poor and mentally disabled. i taught my self how to build and program computers and security in 4 months after i learned to turn 1 on for the first time. my first system i built was world famous it was the first abit ai7 and thermalright xp120 combo. all other tech sites said it was impossible did write ups and photos and reasons why..i studied drawings and read on other like mobos from other companies i just knew it would work.well it was a simple straight down install. no extra noting or complications. i never touched a computer or even read on 1 until 4months before and im retarded with less then a 7th grade education.

    well sorry before i built the ai7 system i had some extra parts laying around and built a p3 450mhz and used w98. so i can use mac os. 98 and xp. hmm a beta of this 7 would be sweet. id like to play with it.

    so how is it as a gamer can it play both dx 9 and 10 games? do you have to install multi os’s to use the other os’s as in the videos the virtual feature [xp 98 vista etc]? and can you still get / be a beta tester..thanks alot

    To be a beta tester for Microsoft, you’d probably have to contact Microsoft and tell them why you would be a suitable beta tester. What they would logically look for in a tester is reliability and a particular feature the tester wishes to experiment with for a specific purpose, i.e. “I want to evaluate the effectiveness of Windows 7 in a corporate environment by installing it on the workstations in my company and installing all necessary software for my business to operate efficiently.” Testers are are likely expected to send constant status reports to Microsoft with information about any bugs or other issues that appear to be caused by Windows 7, including those caused by hardware and software alike, so that Microsoft can either correct them prior to the final release or mention them in the Readme on the install CD / DVD.

    As for DirectX, DirectX 10 supports games that require DirectX 9.0c and older, at least on the level of Direct3D backwards compatibility. However, considering all this talk of cutting off backwards compatibility of Windows software in general, I doubt having a backwards-compatible DirectX will do any good in Windows 7
