The name is official: It’s Windows 7
Who would have thought that Microsoft decided to keep the codename of the next operating system instead of giving it a fancy name like they did with Windows Vista and more recently with Windows Mojave? It was just posted over at the official Windows Vista blog that the next name of the next Microsoft operating system will be Windows 7. It is still surprising giving the careful wording of the Microsoft representatives that have spoken about the coming operating system. They never failed to mention that the name was a codename and most likely not the final name.
Mike Nash, who made the announcement at the Windows Vista Blog called it a choice for simplicity:
The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows. We’ve used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or “aspirational” monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista. And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense. Likewise, coming up with an all-new “aspirational” name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.
The decision does make sense from a business perspective as well. Everyone was already calling the new operating system Windows 7. The news got out on websites who spread it even further. Everyone was thinking Windows 7 when they were thinking about the new Microsoft operating system and taking the short time until the new release it would have taken a huge marketing budget to erase the name with another one.
What do you think? Was it a good decision to keep the name of the next Windows operating system?

I think if they had referred to it as “Windows Codename 7″ instead of “Windows 7″ people would’ve been more obvious to the fact that it wasn’t the final name. Because they kept referring to it as Windows 7, it looked and sounded like the name for the final version, so I’d call it MS’s blunder for not making it clear enough, assuming this wasn’t their intent from the beginning.

Vista is -to be honest- one of the biggest failure int the windows product line… performed mostly like the Windows Me.
It is a wise and understandable decision to drop the Vista name and consider the budget of the new brands marketing as a total waste of money.

Windows Mojave IS Windows Vista…. it was a marketing campaign to prove to people that people had just heard so much negative press about Vista that if they got the same product with a different name, they would like it. Mojave got positive responses across the board… and it was identical to Vista except for branding. Google it.
Frankly I think the branding and marketing of Vista were the failures… the OS itself is a pretty typical windows OS with a few added features. That and the fact that they let Apple do more talking about VIsta than MS were doing.

I don’t understand why the windows vista was a failure at all? I believe it to be superior to os x and windows xp for sure. Sure it requires hardware, but wouldn’t it be far cheaper than the osx anyways!?
