Updated Windows 7 Release Schedule

Forum member Riso posted information about Microsoft’s release schedule for Windows 7. Please keep in mind that the information are unverified and will probably stay that way as Microsoft will most likely not comment on the release schedule yet.

Here is the updated Windows 7 release schedule according to Riso:

  • Current Build: 6.1.6954 pre Beta 1
  • End December: new build 69xx Public Beta
  • Summer 2009: a pre-release candidate build
  • Last Quarter 2009: Release Candidates
  • End 2009: RTM release
  • December: Windows 7 Final

He also mentioned that there will be an Eee PC version with Windows 7 installed. The source seems to be coming from the Microsoft Conference Technical Summit 2008 Berlin. We keep you updated as soon as we get a confirmation or additional details.

If that release schedule is right then I finally can upgrade from WinXP next year. Hopefully the info about multiple versions is not true, because that would be a mistake. Home, Pro and Business is all you need for client side software.

I tested Win7 build 6801 and liked what I saw and honestly felt good about this Vista remake. I tested it with only 1Gb of PC800 DDR2 RAM, a 2.8GHz Pentium D and a 512MB Radeon 3650. It ran better than Vista did at 2GB of RAM, but I recommend no less than 2GB tho and 64 bit CPU to get the full power.

Plan to pull out some old hardware to do some more long term tests of Win7 as it develops.

Planning to go straight to 64 bit version and already have my next gen hardware list. Currently using WinXP 32 bit, tried 64 bit but to my drivers and software issues.

Looking good.. I tested on a 3.2Ghz P4, 2GB of DDR and a 256Mb 6800GT, it ran quite well much better than Vista did on this PC

  3. It is desired by consumers to see a layout such as this which shows the steps that are planned for a product, and the estimated dates for each step along the way.  Customers realize that changes can occur, and are quite glad to see the result of much organizational effort.  It takes much planning just to make a tentative timetable.

This runs very slow on my machine for some reason.

I’ve been testing it on 2 machines, (a desktop: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz, 8GB DDR2 @ 800MHz of RAM, and a nVidia 9800GT 512MB Video Card.) And (a laptop: Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 2.0 GHz, 4GB DDR2 @ 667MHz of RAM, and a nVidia GeForce Go 8600GT 256MB Video Card.) And it’s been running beautifully for me. Much faster then Windows Vista…

I must say I have not been this impressed by an operating system in a long time!
Pat on the back to Microsoft for a change I’m looking forward to purchasing if price isn’t too high of course :)
