Display Icons And Text In The Windows 7 Taskbar
Martin | Jan 12, 2009 | Comments 9
The Windows 7 taskbar has seen a major overhaul. It looks and behaves different than the taskbars on previous versions of the Windows operating system. One of those changes is the icon only display in the Windows 7 taskbar.
All open programs will be shown with their icons only. Some users might prefer the old way of displaying items in the Windows taskbar instead.
It is actually possible to change the display of the Windows 7 Taskbar items so that they display both icons and text instead.
To do that right-click empty space in the Windows 7 Taskbar and select Properties from the options. Locate the Taskbar Buttons entry and change the dropdown menu on the right from Always Combine, hide labels to Never Combine and press OK to apply the changes.

From then on icons and text will be displayed in the Windows 7 Taskbar.

Sorry but MS have screwed this up again.
These new features are nothing but glitter on a turd cake.
The new taskbar features are no better that the previous taskbar. This would be the first feature my users would want turning off.
you are not meant to be trying to design a new operating system, just make the good one (XP) better.
To try and identify apps by their icon, then have to hover over the work out what the image is, stupid and pointless.
waste of time.
Pointless, that’s not true!
Didn’t you ever used the Quick Start bar in XP? I use the dock on my Mac and there are also only icons in it.
After a few days, you’ll get to know your icons of your programs well. Believe me!
OK. I’m on day 2 of having Windows 7 on my laptop, and the only negative thing I have to say about it, is once I decided I liked it and decided to delete everything from my XP partition, permissions were kind of a pain in the ass… BUT at the same time, that’s something I’ll learn to adjust to and once that happens and I know where everything’s at in the new Windows, i’m sure it’ll be just as easy as running XP. I love the new taskbar (being a big fan of the OS X dock myself), the way they integrated features from the old-school Windows taskbar/start button, features from the Mac Dock, and even a couple new features that are pretty sweet.
I’m one of the people who completely avoided ever installing Vista on one of my own computers (although I did install a Longhorn alpha at one time, long before Vista was out, that stayed on the computer for about a day before that drive was wiped), so I may have a little more to adjust to, coming straight from XP, but so far, for me, Windows 7 (x64) has done everything i need it to. And the part that really boggles my mind, is that it seems to run faster than Windows XP (or Windows XP x64 for all that matters) on the same machine.
I never thought I’d say this, but it looks like ol’ Billy Boy finally did something right. Let’s just hope the final release doesn’t disappoint.. Then again, if that was the case, I’d just keep using the beta. It’s sad when this BETA version seems to be faster, more stable, and just an overall better OS than any FINAL version MS has ever released.
I’m giving them kudos for trying a sleek, new setup. But the main reason I give them props is that it was really, really easy to switch back to the XP/Vista taskbar system. Really easy. So I don’t have any issues with the new system since they made it a matter of seconds to undo ;D
I also like it. Reminds me of the OSX Dock except not nearly as good. Still it’s a good design.
Reminds me of the OSX Dock except not nearly as large or in the way
I wonder how many of the beta downloads of windows 7 have become replacement OS over Vista on home PC’s (even with the MS warnings). Also, how many of the same PC’s had the Vista Beta removed after just 1 day.
I pose the question becouse I liked W7 enough to install it on ’my’ main home PC. I should think that I’ll be using it until the next release of W7. A bit of a risk maybe but everything is backed up so what-the-hay.
Is this just me or are there a lot of people out there doing the same ? Is there any chance of a survey on windows7news website ?
Oh my god.
What kind of retarded ignorant american would not know about this?
i put a window 7 skin on my pc cause my xp looked boring and then i went back to my xp skin and it left the taskbar buttons like windows 7 and now i cant change them to make them show the labels can anyone help please
