Will Windows 7 Launch Before January 2010?

Microsoft have stated publicly that Windows 7 will launch 3 years after Windows Vista, which places the launch date for Windows 7 at January 2010. However, the beta trials of Windows 7 are going so well that speculation has started that Microsoft will launch Windows 7 earlier.

In a poll run on this site asking ‘When Will Windows 7 Launch?‘, over 30,000 readers voted and 48% of users voted for 2009, and 16% of readers voted for Q1 2010.

Personally, I don’t think the launch will be brought forward significantly. Bringing forward such a major launch such as Windows 7 would be a massive undertaking. There are so many moving parts involved in bringing Windows to market Everything from agreeing the box design, to printing CDs, to getting promotional materials in the hands of retailers etc takes time, and I doubt Microsoft will be able to shift the date forward by more than a month to say December 2009. This of course though will allow Microsoft to capitalise on the vital Christmas market.

The progress that Microsoft are showing during the beta program and the positive feedback that testers are giving the product will feed through to a very strong release, whenever it happens. I still have many friends who are nervous about upgrading to Vista because of the nightmare stories they have heard. I don’t think these friends will be as nervous about upgrading to Windows 7, because most early adopters are giving it a good write up.

Whatever happens, hopefully Windows 7 will give a much needed economic boost to the PC market!

I believe it had been Microsoft's original intention to release Windows 7 in mid to late 2009 as Bill Gates had mentioned then would not comment on again. Let everyone else believe a later release date as well allow competition to lax on the notion Microsoft is hard at work for the perfect OS but will not be able to deliver by Christmas 2009. Further solidifying my statement is the current state of the economy. Although I don't believe the market itself is hurting as much as people are hurting it. Setting that aside I believe Microsoft will make the push and release earlier than expected and with any luck boost the market. This will not only prove beneficial to Microsoft against As*h*le Crashntoss but will help chip maker Intel as well. i7 Chips are already on the market and waiting for its counterpart. I could be wrong but I believe it makes a bit of sense.
  • I hope to god they release this before January! I'm done with Vista.

OEM will have Win7 by November just like Vista. A December retail release would give DIY builders a good reason to get a copy for that new 2010 rig they just built.
Retail sales are what will really tell you if Win7 is going to be a success and not OEM pre-installed boxes.
    I hope for Decembe 26.
  • I have never tried Win 7 before. But, I hate Vista. I still prefer to use XP. I hope W7 will be better than XP or Vista.

Windows 7 is like XP speed with a much nicer UI, people will love it when they use it. Windows 7 will be successful guaranteed!

I run Windows 7 on my desktop and on my laptop. Laptop came with XP and I dual boot with build 7057. Desktop came with Vista and again I dual boot with Windows 7 7057. I'll also purchase it when it is released.

I hope they release something soon.  I purchased 3 laptops in the February and ended up returning 4 of the 7 because of problems as soon as computers were turned on and went to windows update site then rebooted they crashed.    Error read  system bug and they were not cheap laptops.  In fact the 2 least expensive are the ones I still have with no problems.  The others had all the bells and whistles.  I was told by retailer they had a lot of problems with Vista and they suggest I don't invest in expensive model wait for new release or have XP installed on computer instead of vista.  Just another added expense for me.  Maybe I should try Mac.

    @ Tammy
I was think the same thing till I tried Win7 beta and I have choose to wait on buying a laptop till OEM start shipping it. I make sure all hardware and software I buy for my workstations are now Vista ME capable so it has a good chance of it working with Win7.
Mac's can dual boot other OS using bootcamp, so you real can not go wrong either way.
