TG Daily have written a post, which quotes Bill Veghte, a Senior VP at Microsoft, as saying that Windows 7 will sell up 177m copies by the end of 2009 as it is the first OS in two decades where Microsoft has had to turn people away who want it try it.
If this number were to be achieved, it would require a lot of XP users who rightly or wrongly decided to pass on Windows Vista, upgrading to Windows 7. Microsoft seem convinced that XP Mode will be the answer, as well as high compatibility:
“We wanted to make darn certain that we could logo certify over 16,000 partners working on Win7 apps. Within 72 hours of launching Win 7 Release Candidate, we had two certified graphics drivers”
What will work in Microsoft’s favour is the high awareness of Windows 7, and the favourable reception that the Windows 7 Beta and Windows 7 Release Candidate received. The way Microsoft have built up a good buzz around Windows 7, feels more like the approach of a small company who can’t afford big above the line campaigns and instead have to rely upon viral campaigns. Veghte claims awareness is at ‘40%, with no marketing spend’, which is obviously inflated, but probably not too far from the truth.
Once the heavily funded Microsoft marketing machine get behind Windows 7, I think it is safe to say that Microsoft’s dominance of the OS market will only grow over the next 3 years.
