Follow Up: Windows 7 Boots Slower Than Vista?

I recently posted an article after IOlO ( a company that sells PC tune up software ) reported that Windows 7 took longer to boot that Windows Vista. And not by a second or two, but almost 30 seconds. Read the full article here.

Understandably I and several others of our readers were quite surprised by this claim. I recounted my own experience with Windows 7 vs Windows Vista boot times and so did many of our readers. The overall result from this was quite clear, Windows 7 was, much faster than Windows Vista. With some readers reporting times of 20-30 seconds to load Windows 7.

We also had some comments saying how ironic it was that a company that sells PC tune up software was coming up with these boot times. Well the guys over at Channel Web decided to do some investigation into this. They performed a clean install of Windows 7 onto their Dell Vostro 220, with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz CPU and 4 GB of RAM. They found that the clean install of Windows 7 took 53 seconds to perform a full boot, whats more they didn’t wait till the CPU was idle but rather, they stopped the clock once they were able to execute a command on the desktop.

IOlO is best known for its ” System Mechanic ” software which according to their website can

System Mechanic Slows Down Your PC

System Mechanic Slows Down Your PC

“boost Windows speeds up to 800 percent”

System Mechanic has lots of little tools for tweaking registry entries and defragging various files, all meant to optimize Windows boot times. Channel Web installed this software and ran the deep optimization option for Windows start up. They were then forced to reboot and this time it took 54 seconds for the system to boot up! A 1 second increase… but then they went and ran the extensive repair all computer issues option and they found this increased the boot time further to 55 seconds! After they ran another tool included in System Mechanic which defrags the registry and hard drive. They found that after they ran this the boot time reduced back down to 54 seconds, but still not as quick as the original 53 seconds.

So there you have it, to all our readers who reckoned that these were somewhat “convenient” findings by IOlO, a company that just happens to claim it can speed up Windows boot times by 800%, it appears you were right.

I never trust Iolo. Their software just a bunch of bloatware. They say all those crap just to gain publicity. What a shame...

yep, true! such programs is really bloated. I have finetuned my PC with small programs like CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, AutoRuns and Startup delayer. Now my PC boots in 25 seconds, from start til I really can use it! on the company it boots in 50 sec, but that includes login and is a slower PC. Try to beat that! :)

On my Samsung dual core laptop, 7 boots in exactly 37 seconds, every time. To arrive at this you must turn off a lot of non-essential services (same as Vista) and put others on manual.

On my laptop, 7 boots into "desktop ready" in exactly 37 seconds without fail. Of course this requires stopping all unnecessary Services and putting others on manual. On the same machine, same hard drive, identical proceedures, Vista takes twice as long. No contest.

    sorry, double post...
  • Vista is the finest Operating system i ever used before. windows 7 is little bit slower if we comparing with Vista.
  • nomadewolf
    That's crap!
You can't test the efficiency of this software in a newly installed windows... A newly installed windows is as fast as you can get, and problem free, etc, etc
This software is meant for machines with problems, lots of programs installed (and ininstalled), and speed issues...
Test it on a real environment, and THEN post the results.
This test is as biased as the claim of the so called pc tune up software company that W7 boots slower than Vista...
